FRED MARCHANT is the author of Tipping Point, winner of the 2993 Word Works Washington Prize in Poetry, and Full Moon Boat, published in the US by Graywolf. Professor of English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Suffolk University in Boston, he is also a long-time teaching affiliate of the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences at the University of Massachussets, Boston. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he studied at Providence College, Brown University and the University of Chicago. In 1970 he was one of the first officers in the US Marine Corps ever to be discharged honourably as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, a fact which shaped much of his life and poetry thereafter.

"I love the luminous, tough integrity that distinguishes these poems as they move buoyant and perfectly balanced between their given and chosen worlds. In its lyrically plain-voiced, honest cadences, Full Moon Boat is that rare thing, a book of wisdom" -- Eamon Grennan
