GABRIEL ROSENSTOCK was born in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick in 1949. He is a poet, novelist, essayist and playwright. Gabriel Rosenstock is the author/translator of over 180 books, mostly in Irish. He is a member of the Aosdána, the Irish affiliation of creative artists. He is a Lineage Holder of Celtic Buddhism and a former Chairperson of Poetry Ireland/Éigse Éireann. Gabriel Rosenstock was taught haiku at the Schule für Dichtung, Vienna, and Hyderabad Literary Festival. He has translated into Irish the poetry of Ko Un, Seamus Heaney, K. Satchidanandan and others. He has translated into Irish the plays of Beckett, Frisch and Yeats, and the songs of Bob Dylan, Kate Bush, The Pogues, Leonard Cohen and more. His Irish-language versions of Lieder and art songs may be enjoyed here. Gabriel Rosenstock also writes and translates poetry and prose for children. He is a recipient of the Judges’ Award, Irish Book Awards, and has recorded his translations for Walker Éireann on Soundcloud. Recent haiku-related titles include Emptiness with photographer Ron Rosenstock (Long Exposure Press, 2017), Judgement Day (The Onslaught Press, 2016), Antlered Stag of Dawn (The Onslaught Press, 2015), Orpheus in the Underpass (The Onslaught Press, 2017), a book of haiku-awakening for young readers, Haiku, más é do thoil é (An Gúm, 2014), a version in English of that title Fluttering their way into my head (Evertype, 2014). His most recent volume of poems is Glengower: Poems for No One in Irish and English (The Onslaught Press, 2018). He has translated into Irish the Aṣṭāvakra Gītā: Gíta Ashtávakra: Aṣṭāvakra Gītā (Evertype, 2019). Other recent work includes a bilingual volume, Bliain an Bhandé/ Year of the Goddess (Dedalus Press, 2007) and a volume in English, Uttering Her Name (Salmon Poetry, 2009). Gabriel Rosenstock’s collaborations with visual artists and photographers include Walk with Gandhi (with artist Masood Hussain), and several short films (also with Masood Hussain). His collaborative work has featured on many platforms, including The Culturium. English-language versions of his tanka have been serialised in Modern Literature.
